Brad and Hannah,
Duplin Bridge 36 lost sediment from around a slope drain and therefore from the slope fill and over
wattles at Sta. -L- +/- 13+20 Rt. This occurred after a 1 ½ - inch rain Thursday (7/7) night (there had
previously been 2 ½ inches of rain over the weekend, but the project was reviewed after that and
there had not been losses past any measures after that event). There is a ditch cut in high ground in
this location (that existed before the project started) – it drains to wetlands off of the project and to
a pond. The sediment from the loss of the slope fill reached the wetlands and the pond. The
sediment plume was approximately 24 feet long and between 8’ and 2’ wide. It was 6” deep in the
deepest area.
A crew removed the sediment from the wetland and the pond using hand tools today. They were
repairing the slope and slope drain with equipment when I was on site today. I asked them to place
additional erosion control in the non jurisdictional ditch.
I have attached photos 1-5 which show the areas before they removed the sediment. Photos 6, 7,
and 8 show the areas after they removed the sediment.
Please let me know if there are any questions.
Thank you,
Anneliese
