R R 3 RIPRAP C509 SCALE. N.T.S. GIRDED VERSUS UNIFORM RIPRAP Rilrap is classed as either graded or uniform. Graded riprap includes a wile mi_ture of stone sizes. Uniform riprap consists of stones nearly all the sane siz:. Graded riprap is preferred to uniform riprap in most applications becauseit foms a dense, flexible cover. Uniform riprap is more open, and cannot adjtst as ;f ectively to movement of the stones. Graded riprap is also cheaper:o insall requiring less hand work for installation than uniform riprap, which mut be placed in a uniform pattern. Uniform riprap may give a more pleasbg aplearance. Rilrap sizes are designated by either the mean diameter or the weight >f the stones. The diameter specification is often misleading since the Storrs areusually angular. However, common practice is to specify stone size ly thediameter of an equivalent size of spherical stone. Table 6.15a lists sone typcal stones by weight, spherical diameter, and the corresponding rectanguhr dinensions. These stone sizes are based upon an assumed specific weight mf 16: lb/ft. A nethod commonly used for specifying the range of stone sizes in graded ripap is to designate a diameter for which some percentage, by weight, will ie smeller. For example, "d85" specifies a mixture of stones in which 85% of tie stoic by weight would be smaller than the diameter specified. Most desigts arebased on "d5,", or median size stones. Rilrap and gravel are often designated by N.C. Department of Transportation spcifications (Table 6.15b). DIKE IS A TEMPORARY MEASURE TO KEEP RUNOFF FROM _EAVING THE SITE. IT WILL BE REMOVED ONCE THE SITE IS GRADED AND STORM STRUCTJRES ARE INSTALLED TO KEEP ALL RUNOFF ON THE SITE. SEE DETAIL 7/C-507 DITCH 3 FOR DESIGN CALCULATIONS AND DIMENSIONS. Maintenance Inspect skimmer sediment basins at least weekly and after each significant (one-lalf inch or greater) rainfall event and repair immediately. Remove sedinent and restore the basin to its original dimensions when sediment accunulates to one-half the height of the first bate. Pull the skimmer to one ide so that the sediment underneath it can be excavated. Excavate the sedinent from the entire basin, not just around the skimmer or the first cell. Makc sure vegetation growing in the bottom of the basin doe; not hold down the slimmer. 2 SKIMMER SEDIMENT BASIN T S T C509 SCALE: N.T.S. Repar the baffles if they are damaged. Re -anchor the baffles if water is flowug underneath or around them. If the skimmer is clogged with trash and there is water in the basin, usually jerkiig on the rope will make the skimmer bob up and down and dislodge the &bris and restore flow. If this does not work, pull the skimmer over to the sde of the basin and remove the debris. Also check the crfice inside the skimner to see if it is clogged; if so remove the debris. If the skimmer arm or barrel pipe is clogged, the orifice can )e removed and the obstruction cleared with a plumber's snake or by flushing with water. Be sure and replace the orifice before repositioning the skimmer. Cheer the fabric lined spillway for damage and make any •equired repairs with abric that spans the full width of the spillway. Check the embankment, spillvays, and outlet for erosion damage, and inspect the embankment for pipin; and settlement. Make all necessary repairs immediately. Remove all trash and other debris from the skimmer and pool areas. Freeang weather can result in ice forming in the basin.
