A town crew member discovered the SSO when he was mowing along the Right of Way and noticed sewage coming out of the two pick holes on the manhole lid. Immediate action was taken, our first call was made to two other town employees to bring the vac truck to relieve the SSO. With the manhole being off the shoulder of the roadway, we had to set up a "one lane road" so our men could work safely, thereafter we swiftly corrected the SSO. We determined the main cause of the SSO was grease. We believe the upstream businesses have played a role in the accumulation of F.O.G. in the main lines. We did report our spill to the newspaper and re -ran our bi-annual F.O.G. ad alongside the spill report. Crews took time to clean the area where the spill occurred. We have cleaned several hundred feet from MH 421 since the spill and plan to clean the whole trunk line this summer. We plan to monitor this area to make sure we do not experience any more SSOs in the future. The condition of the pipes and manholes in this area are very good, Manholes have been rehabbed and Clay pipe has been Insituformed (CIPP) as recently as 2016. Please take this under consideration as you review our SSO response.
