Inspection Summary:
On June 14, 2022, Division of Water Resources staff Caitlin Caudle completed a compliance evaluation inspection. James
Brown, ORC, Scott Hedrick, and Brianne Holloway were present during the entire inspection. A review of records, treatment
facilities, and monitoring wells was completed. This review reflected compliance with the subject permit.
Other observations:
• Three signs are present stating access to the infiltration pond is prohibited. Two signs were repaired from the last
inspection, but one was not. The sign was repaired while Staff was on site.
• The only meter that is part of the treatment train is the flow meter. There is a water meter on site.
• The embankments of the infiltration pond are grassed and mowed. All embankments looked good.
• A sludge survey is completed yearly, and no residuals have been removed from the pond. The screen boxes are cleaned
daily at the end of production.
• Three screen boxes are present at the facility. One is below a load out tank for solid wastes, and the two others are
behind the plant. These two screen boxes collect process water from the plant. See site map for additional information.
• The March 2022 monitoring report was submitted on 4/2/2022 but has not been provided to WSRO. Staff recommended
that Mr. Brown resubmit the report.
• A chart is used to record daily flow and a totalizer is present. The charts are changed daily, and the totalizer recorded
daily. Influent into the infiltration pond is measured.
• All effluent gravity flows to the infiltration pond. Generators are present that can run all electrical components of the
system (aerators, totalizer, and flow meter).
• pH is done in house. Mr. Brown collects effluent samples and well samples. Statesville analytical is used.
• Historic exceedances of NH3 are present in MW2.
• The flowmeter was calibrated on 2/23/2022.
• A defoaming agent has been used in the past but the pump controlling the addition of the agent to the egg was process
is broken. It will be fixed within the next few weeks. Staff have no concerns about this as no foam was present in the
infiltration pond.
• Two aerators are present.
• MW1 had a broken hinge. This was repaired the day of inspection. Phots were provided after the hinge was repaired.
• The well plates of MW1 — MW3 were not appropriately marked by the well installers. Previous DWR staff allowed that
other labels could be applied to the well casings with all necessary information. The current labels had faded, and Staff
recommended that they be replaced within the next few years. Photos were provided of new labels that will be installed on
the well casings.
• MW1 and MW2 are at the review boundary and MW3 and MW4 are at the compliance boundary.
• The current permittee is incorrect. All future correspondence should be directed to Mr. Marty Parsons
(marty.parsons@tyson.com).
