Hi Brad and Hannah,
To add to the information in Sean’s email regarding sediment losses at the subject bridge, please see
the attached photos of 4 sediment loss areas. These occurred yesterday (6/8/2022) after heavy rain.
The inspector mentioned that there was 3 inches of rain. With the exception of loss area 4, the
losses appeared to occur due to water flow to weak spots in the top of the fabric.
Area 1
In the vicinity of L -Det.- Sta 13+15 right in an existing NJ ditch (conveyance) area, the existing ditch
area filled with sediment. There was a wattle break in the silt fence here which was overwhelmed.
The area is 25’ x 6’ x 6” deep. The are no wetlands in this conveyance area except for at the end of
the sediment impact. The contractor has started removing sediment from the conveyance. There is
a ponded area just beyond, which the sediment did not reach. The pond is labelled on the permit
drawings.
Area 2
This is in the vicinity of L -Det.- Sta. 14+30 right. A small amount of sediment overwhelmed the silt
fence here and is in the wetlands. The area is 2’ x 1’ and unknown depth. The contractor will
remove with had tools.
Area 3
This area is in the vicinity of L -Det.- Sta. 14+35 right. The sediment that went over the silt fence in
the area is 6’ x 4’ x 7” depth at the thickest to 1” at the edge of the loss. The contractor will remove
with hand tools.
Area 4
This area is in front of the abutment at end bent 1. The existing abutment was cut and will remain;
in one of the pictures you can see the form of the new end bent 1. The sediment went into the
stream, and is contained by the silt fence. The sediment will be removed by hand tools. The area
above the loss will be raked back. Silt fence will be installed at the edge of the cut abutment. Riprap
will be eventually be placed in front of end bent 1.
As Sean mentioned, there are several areas where they will need to remove material from inside the
silt fence (the hand clearing area). We can follow-up with their progress on the clean-up.
Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.
