(Trane) owns and operates the HVAC equipment remanufacturing facility located at 4500 Morris Field Drive, Charlotte, NC. Trane's stormwater aspects are authorized via Certificate of Coverage No. NCG030098 issued by the NC Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) under Stormwater Metal Fabrication General Permit Number NCG030000 (Permit). Per provisions under Part E of the Permit, this letter serves as Trane's written notification to DEQ that recent analytical test results are elevated for Copper and Zinc. The following table summarizes the testing results. Benchmark Parameter Value Sampling Date Result Total Recoverable 01119 0.010 July 8, 2021 0.032 Copper (Freshwater) August 16, 2021 0.15 September 1, 2021 0.096 Total Recoverable 01094 0.126 1 August 16, 2021 0.24 Zinc (Freshwater) I September 1, 2021 0.18 Following these recent sampling events, Trane completed site inspections to identify possible causes of the elevated concentrations. Minor housekeeping items were noted and efforts are underway to fully corrected. No other root causes were identified. Trane has experienced an ongoing challenge with the Copper and Zinc benchmarks as communicated to DEQ in previous monthly Discharge Monitoring Reports. Past investigative studies suggest rain falling on the Trane property contains measurable concentrations of Copper/Zinc in some cases at or near the benchmark values. We recognize that other Trane site factors may also contribute to the elevated stormwater concentrations. If you have any questions related to this notification, please contact Ms. Carrie Nguyen, Trane Charlotte EHS Manager, by telephone at (704) 391-5421 or by email at carrie.nguyen@trane.com.
