Brad and Hannah,
We have 3 losses to report from the Duplin bridge 82 project which received approximately 3.5
inches on Friday night in a short amount of time. The losses weren’t discovered by our crews until
this morning. The losses were due in large part the large amount of disturbed area onsite right now
related to the removal of the existing road. The first loss site was an area that washed out around
the existing slope drain, causing a roadway failure. This sediment eventually made it’s way to the
wattle which overtopped on the west/903 side of Burn Coat Creek. The second loss site overtopped
a wattle into the Site 2 wetlands. This deposit covered a large area, approximately 30’ x 20’, but was
not very deep and more of a thin film. I have cautioned to not over-excavate this site. The third loss
site overtopped a wattle into the Site 4 wetlands. This deposit extended approximately 15’ from the
project and approximately 10’ wide, 3-4 inches thick. It was difficult to see due to the thick
vegetation but I marked the extent of the deposit with some wetland flagging. All of these losses will
be recovered using hand tools and all of the contaminated/defunct wattles will be replaced. We
have urged them to finish grading and getting some ground cover on what they can to minimize the
amount of disturbed area onsite. We are planning to visit this site during our ride-through on
Wednesday.
I am sorry to have to report these losses. Please let me know if I can provide any additional
information.
Thanks,
Sean Farrell
