Hey Dave,
We had some isolated, yet heavy storms yesterday afternoon in Wilkes County. As a result, we lost an estimated 3 five
gallon buckets of sediment to a UT of Fish Dam Creek, at Wilkes 75. Luckily, they have been in the process of building
the outlet structure of the pipe the UT flows through and have built a dike and have been running a pump to keep the
area around the outlet dewatered, which goes to a silt bag before entering Fish Dam Creek.
While some of the sediment likely overtopped the dike and washed into Fish Dam Creek during the storm, a good bit
looks to have settled into the diked/dewatered work area below the pipe outlet, and on the sides of the stream at the
pipe inlet (you can see the latter in the photo). I met with the contractor this morning and they are in the process of
cleaning sediment out from around the pipe, and fixing the SDO’s (one collapsed, while the other partially failed).
The rain gauge only registered ¼” of rain, so we assume it must of malfunctioned – it was very windy (lots of down
leaves and limbs on the roadway nearby) and not sure if that could have caused the rainfall amount to be
underestimated, but I’m imagine they received a good 1-2 inches in a short amount of time. As such, they are assuming
a > 1” rain and were doing an inspection today, and will note the urgent items and corrections to them on the NPDES
forms. I plan to swing by late today or Monday to check on things.
Thanks and let me know if you need any more information - see you Tuesday,
Kevin
