DANIEL SMITH Director Mr. Keith Thomas 22976 Lake Tillery Road Albemarle, NC 28001 Mr. Thomas: NORTH CAROLINA Environmental Quality May 20, 2022 SUBJECT: Complaint Investigation of Sediment in Cove on Lake Tillery @ 22976 Lake Tillery Rd. Incident # 202200771 Stanly County On May 16, 2022, Roberto Scheller of this Office investigated a complaint of sediment from the Highway 27 construction project washing into cove on Lake Tillery (Yadkin Pee -Dee River). Review of the drainage feature that passes under Lake Tillery Road (SR 1803) and discharges into Lake Tillery was determined to be an ephemeral (stormwater) stream with a drainage area of 15 of 20 acres. Up -gradient soils consist of Goldston (GoF) series of very channery (stony), silt loam on 15 to 45 percent slopes. Down -gradient, east side of Lake Tillery Road, soils consist of Tarrus (TbD) series soil a channery, silt loam on 8 to 15 percent slope. Because of the slope of the drainage area and the silty loamy nature of the soils, stream banks of the ephemeral stream are highly erodible. It was determined that the silt accumulation in the cove is a natural process and any disturbance within the subject drainage area can increase the sediment load of the ephemeral stream and sediment in the cove. During review of US Geologic Topo Maps and on -site review of drainage area it was determined that this drainage area is not connected to or part of any drainage area within the Highway 27 widening project.
