Kreiser c .1 "` INTRODUCTION The following Soil and Site Evulation is submitted to assist in a site assessment for a single family surface wastewater disposal system for a 13-acre tract located on Bass Mountain Road near Snow Camp in Alamance County,North Carolina. Previous soil investigations indicated that the site was unsuitable for subsurface sewage disposal systems and the Alamance County Health Department issued a denial for an Improvement permit for the property. The Catena Group,Inc. (TCG)has been retained to conduct in-situ hydraulic conductivity(KsAT)measurements, determine a suitable area for a surface system and provide a recommended loading rate. At the time of the survey, the majority of the property was wooded with a mix of hardwood and pine trees. A small stream is located near the western property boundary. An abandoned home is located near the road as well as several farm sheds located throughout the property. INVESTIGATION METHODOLOGY The site was investigated on March 7, 2007. Seventeen(17)soil borings made with a hand-turned auger were placed on the eastern side of the stream in the general area investigated by the Alamance County Health Department. Observations of the landscape (slope, drainage patterns, past use, etc.) as well as soil properties(depth, texture, structure, seasonal wetness, restrictive horizons, etc.)to a depth>48 inches when possible were recorded. Soil color was determined with a Munsell Soil Color Chart. A hand held global positioning system(GPS)was used to locate each soil boring as well as other pertinent site features. Figure 1 presents the location of the soil borings as well as other pertinent site information. Soils were classified into the following two Groups(Group 1, and Group 2). Typical profile descriptions for each group are presented below in Table 1 and Table 2. . GROUP 1: These soils are able to accommodate a surface discharge system (have at least 12 inches of soil without restrictions). Table 1. Typical soil profile description for Group 1 soils. Horizon Color Texture Structure Consistence Clay Redox Depth Mineralogy Depletions (inches) (Yes/No) 0-6 10 YR 4/3 sandy- granular friable non- No loam expansive 6-36 2.5Y 4/6 clay- subangular firm slightly No loam blocky expansive 36-48 2.5Y 4/6 clay- massive friable slightly Yes(10YR loam expansive 5/2) 1 GROUP 2: These soils are unable to accommodate a surface discharge system due to a seasonal high water table(less than 12 inches of soil). Table 2. Typical soil profile description for Group 2 soils. Horizon Color Texture Structure Consistence Clay Redox Depth Mineralogy Depletions (inches) (Yes/No) 0-6 10 YR 5/2 sandy- granular friable non- No loam expansive 5-11 10YR 6/4 sandy subangular firm slightly- No.(10YR clay-loam blocky expansive 6/3) 11-30+ 1OYR 5/8 clay subangular Very firm expansive Yes(1OYR blocky 6/2) In the area of investigation, there was only a small portion of Group 1 soil. The remaining area contained unsuitable soil (Group 2), and a gully which is unsuitable for surface spray systems. Figure 1 presents the approximate boundary between Group 1 and Group 2 soil. Of note, is that the soil in the center of Group l soil on average had at least 24 inches of suitable soil. However, this area is too small to use for a subsurface disposal system. It is estimated that there is approximately between 12,000 and 14,000 square feet of Group 1 soil. LOADING RATE Four hydraulic conductivity (Ksat)tests were performed(Ksatl, B16) in order to determine a loading rate for the Group 1 soil unit. The tests were performed in the most limiting horizon for Group 1, which was the argillic B horizon that occurred between 15 to 36 inches. An average value of 0.08 inches/hour was measured(see attachment). The value of the hydraulic conductivity must be modified by an appropriate design factor to determine loading rates. This factor reflects the influence of several factors including: inherent uncertainty of test values, long periods of saturation are undesirable, variation of permeability within a soil, rooting habits of vegetation, drainage characteristics of the site, and long-term changes in soil permeability due to wastewater application. Since soil morphology for Group 1 soils indicates a seasonal high water table occurring between 12 to 24 inches, a design factor of 3 percent was chosen, resulting in a loading rate of 0.4 inches/week and an instantaneous rate of 0.1 inch/hour. DESIGN WASTE FLOW AND AREA REQUIREMENTS The design waste flow rate is 360 gallons per day for a proposed three bedroom residence. Based on the design flow rate and the recommended loading rate of 0.4 inches/week,the area requirement for a spray system would be approximately 10,000 ft. 2 SURFACE DISCHARGE SYSTEMS Surface discharge systems require a minimum of 12 inches of separation from the ground surface to the seasonal high water table. There are two methods of surface disposal,a spray system or a drip system. While loading rates are typically the same for either system, the major difference are the setbacks(or buffers)required for each. Some of the more pertinent setback requirements are listed in Table 3. Table 3. Surface Discharge Systems Setbacks (feet) Site Feature Spray(ft) Drip(ft) Property Line 150 50 Dwelling(off site) 400 100 Dwelling(on site) 200 50 Wells 100 100 Streams 100 50 CONCLUSION The findings presented herein represent TCG's professional opinion based on our site and soils evaluation and knowledge of the current laws and rules governing on-site wastewater systems in North Carolina. There is approximately 12,000 to 14,000 square feet of suitable soil (Group 1) located on the site. However, a survey may be necessary to ensure compliance with the required setbacks. The recommended loading rate for surface application is 0.4 inches/week and an instantaneous rate of 0.1 inch/hour. There is no guarantee that the recommended loading rate in the describe system will function without runoff or soil saturation as such factors are a function of installation, proper and sound operation and maintenance. The final design of any surface system must be designed and sealed by a Professional Engineer. The final permit must be issued by DENR. Any concurrence with the findings of this report would be made at that time. 3 a ,' ,• • ,' .' ii, . „ . , IF .
