We stopped being a working dairy farm in June of 2019. We now are raising beef cattle, and are only using barns for access to feeding areas and shelter from adverse weather. The maximum population expected at any time in the cattle barns is about 40. They have full time access to pasture. We still have 2 storage ponds on site. 1) One has received only run-off water from a pasture for about 10 years. 2) The second still receives rain run-off from lots, but does not receive manure. Currently, we can irrigate from this pond once a year and still stay under freeboard. * The manure from the lots is stored dry and is hauled dry. I am currently working with Iredell Soil and Water to sample sludge in the bottom of the ponds with the goal of using them primarily as fresh water ponds for irrigation. Pond 2 has considerable lime in the bottom left over from use of lime as bedding for free stalls. I expect to agitate this sludge with water and reduce it to the point where it will not be a problem with nutrient content. Sampled waste water from this pond has been less than 1 pound nitrogen per 1000 gallons for the last 3 years. Thank you for working with me on this issue. Roy Neal Grose
