Assimilative Capacity Data
Drainage area = 0.49 mi2
7Q10 = 0.1 cfs
Average flow = 2.0 cfs
Slope = 941 fpm
The discharge is roughly 0.1 miles above the permitted Highland Falls
Country Club (0.05 mgd).
-- A mass balance can be used to develop a residual chlorine limit:
Standard = 2 mg/1
Upstream = 0 mg/1
Qstream = 0.1 cfs
Qwaste = 0.15 mgd + 0.05 mgd = 0.20 mgd = 0.31 cfs
0.1 • 0 + 0.31 • X = 0.41 • 2
X = 0.82 = 2.6 3 ug/1
0.31
Because of the stream slope (941 fpm), reaeration in the stream is
extremely high (K2 > 50/day). Therefore, the only requirement necessary
to protect the dissolved oxygen standard in the stream is to insure that
the mix concentration be greater than the standard (6 mg/1).
At 20°C, 90% D.O. saturation concentration 8.2 mg/1
Mass balance:
0.1 cfs • 8.2 mg/1 + 0.31 cfs • X = 0.41 cfs •.6 mg/1
X=5.3mg/1
A WLA of 6 mg/1 is recommended.
The BOD limits are based on the definition of 2° treatment and TSS.
The pH and fecal limits are based on water quality standards and
division policy regarding limits for dischargers to streams with
limited dilution under low flow.
