The Westpoint project will be good for Durham, as it will provide new housing with a low environmental impact.
New housing is sorely needed in Durham. Rents and housing prices are rising rapidly, as the local economy
expands and new people move into Durham. New housing needs to be built to house these new arrivals- if
Durham doesn't built enough housing, prices will rise and lower -income residents will be forced out.
The Westpoint project will also have a relatively low environmental impact, as it is a higher -density development.
It uses fewer materials per housing unit, and uses less land per unit. Opponents to the project bemoan the storm
water impacts caused by the projects high impervious surface coverage, but 1) this concern is outweighed by the
project's resource and land efficiency, and 2) runoff can be managed so long as the project builds a storm water
retention pond, as required by law.
Westpoint should be approved, along with other medium and high density projects like it.
