Please keep me in the loop on this project as it develops and let me know if I may be of further assistance. Mason, Once you address the tail at station 18+64, the Corps doesn’t have any concerns. I applaud the Department in their efforts to better the system as a whole despite it really not providing any benefit directly to the project. As we have discussed previously, we hope to be able to provide some level of mitigation credit from the roadway removal as it may provide an ecosystem uplift. The original design was 6 spans at 60 ft and we are know proposing 7 spans at 55 ft to avoid/minimize impacts to the coastal wetlands to the MEP, maintain top down construction and avoid having end bents in poor quality soils. We have also been trying to determine the best plan for removing the roadway to improve the natural flow patterns of the adjacent wetlands and improve water quality, improve habitat, improve aquatic and wildlife passage and give the Department an opportunity for potential onsite mitigation to offset impacts and cost. Even though the additional bridge length will cost ~$112,000.00 I’ve gotten everybody onboard to go with the revised design. Attached is the current proposal and cross sections showing what we feel is the best proposal. Yes, there will be some temporary (beneficial) impacts to the existing coastal wetlands with the proposed excavation but we feel this will be an overall benefit to the system and checks all of our goals listed above. Also, I almost forgot, on the plan view you will see where the excavation limits tail away from the bridge at 18+64. I have discuss this with HTNB and we will be pulling this in substantially by taking the proposed excavation up to natural ground with a 4:1 slope or flatter closer to the bridge. Please review the attached plans and let me know if you have any comments or concerns. Thank you!
