The existing 30' L X 24' W single span bridge with timber deck on I-beams and timber caps on timber piles that are encased in concrete was built in 1941 is structurally deficient and will be replaced with a new, single span 70' L X 30' W, cored siab bridge at the same location. An off-site detour will be utilized during construction. The project involves no wetland impacts (there are no wetlands on the project site), 14 linear feet of temporary stream impacts that are necessary in order to remove the existing timber/concrete piles and 34 linear feet of permanent stream impact associated with bank stabilization under the new bridge span. Proposed Riparian Buffer impacts include 2,643 square feet in Zone 1 and 1,723 square feet in Zone 2 to accommodate the wider span bridge and the necessary fill slopes. It should be noted that 2:1 side slopes were utilized to reduce the buffer impacts around the bridge. A review was conducted for the presence of threatened and endangered species; ; there are no listed species within Alamance County that have federal status. The Bald Eagle is protected in every county in North Carolina under the Bald and Gold Eagle Protection Act; however, no suitable feeding/water source is located within one mile of the project study area to support Bald Eagle habitat.
