The bulkhead was designed for a maximum height of 7’ and has an exposed height of approximately 4 to 5 feet where it is directly adjacent to the existing residence. The design considerations affecting the proposed placement included: ➢ Proximity to the residence – the residence is very close to the existing wall, leaving minimal space or ability to excavate behind the wall without disturbing the existing structure. It was determined that a new wall should be placed in front of it, utilizing helical anchors as the most practical method of anchoring the wall with minimal effect on the foundation. ➢ Soil Failure Plane – The wall was positioned as far as practical from the existing residence in order to shift the potential failure influence zone of the wall-soil “block” away from the residence and reduce the likelihood of foundation undermining. In my professional opinion the wall should not be placed any closer to the existing residence than it currently is. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Respectfully, Timothy P Donohue, PE Design Professional
