(AECOM) is submitting this memorandum on behalf of Sealed Air Corporation to summarize groundwater activities conducted on July 29 and 30, 2015 at the Blue Ridge Tissue Corporation facility located at 1427 Yadkin River Road in Patterson (Lenoir), North Carolina (Site). AECOM gauged site monitoring wells MW -1 through MW-8 on July 29, 2015. Depth to groundwater and groundwater elevation data, as measured during the July 2015 event, are provided in Table 1. Groundwater elevations were similar to those measured during previous sampling events. An analysis of groundwater flow direction will be provided in the annual groundwater monitoring report in December 2015. Seven of the eight existing site monitoring wells were sampled during the July 2015 monitoring event; sampling was not required for well MW -5. Six of these monitoring wells (MW-1, MW -3, MW - 4, MW -6, MW -7, and MW -8) were purged and sampled using a peristaltic pump and low-flow techniques. During purging of each well, water quality measurements were collected to evaluate well stabilization. Parameters pH, specific conductance, temperature, oxidation-reduction potential, and dissolved oxygen were measured using a multi-parameter water quality meter (YSI ProPlus) equipped with a flow-through cell, and turbidity measurements were collected using a portable turbidity meter (Micro TPW). Once water quality parameters stabilized, a groundwater sample was collected in laboratory provided pre-preserved sample containers, labeled, and placed on ice. The groundwater samples were analyzed for total iron, total manganese, and total barium by Prism Laboratories, Inc. Due to the limited water volume and slow recharge in MW -2, low-flow sampling procedures could not be executed and the above listed water quality parameters could not be measured. Sample procedures at MW -2 were modified such that the well was purged dry and allowed to recharge, then the groundwater sample was collected using a bailer. The sample from MW -2 was visibly turbid, and therefore was collected into an unpreserved laboratory-provided container, labeled, and placed on ice for later filtration and preservation by the laboratory (Prism). Due to these modified procedures the sample from MW-2 only was analyzed for dissolved iron, dissolved manganese, and dissolved barium. AECOM 2 During a previous sampling event in August 2014, a slight sheen was observed in purge water collected from MW-4. Therefore, purge water collected from MW -4 during the July 2015 sampling event was closely examined for the presence of a sheen. No sheen was observed in July 2015. Analytical data for the July 2015 event is shown in Table 2, and the laboratory report is provided in Appendix A. Consistent with data collected from previous sampling events, the following summarizes the data collected during the July 2015 groundwater sampling event: • Total iron exceeded the Title 15A North Carolina Administrative Code, Subchapter 2L Groundwater Quality Standard (2L Standard) of 0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L) in samples collected from MW -1, MW -3, MW -4, and MW -6; the dissolved iron result in the sample from MW -2 was also above 0.3 mg/L. • Total manganese exceeded the 2L Standard of 0.05 mg/L in samples collected from MW - 1, MW -3, MW -4, and MW -6; the dissolved manganese result in the sample from MW -2 was also above 0.05 mg/L. • Total barium was detected in all of the wells sampled, but levels were below the 2L Standard of 1 mg/L. • Background well MW -6 samples contained concentrations of total iron and total manganese that exceed 2L Standards by 2X and 4X, respectively. • Samples from property boundary monitoring wells MW -7 and MW -8 continue to be well within compliance of 2L Standards; total iron was not detected in either well. The successive groundwater sampling event is scheduled for December 3, 2015. A sampling event summary report will be submitted following the December sampling. A more comprehensive annual groundwater monitoring report will be submitted in December 2015 as requested.
