DANIEL SMITH Director November 3rd, 2021 Rick Roper Marshall Steam Station Duke Energy 8320 East Hwy. 150 Terrell NC 28682 NORTH CAROLINA Environmental Quality Subject: Review of Duke Energy Progress' Marshall Steam Station (NC0004987); 316(a) 2014-2020 Data. Dear Mr. Roper: Thank you for your submission of the aforementioned document. Based on its review, we find that the data provided to us suggests that Lake Norman is supporting a Balanced and Indigenous Population (BIP) and that Marshal (MSS) operations and thermal output are not causing observable negative effects to the lake according to all DEP monitoring categories (fisheries, water quality, water chemistry, lake productivity, habitat formers, or vertebrate wildlife). Also, trace element analysis in fish for arsenic, selenium, and mercury look acceptable at the 3 MSS fish sampling stations, with only one exceedance of the USEPA screening value for mercury (Alabama Bass, .57 ppm) noted at the upstream control station. If you have any questions regarding these comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.
