Subject: Permit Limit Noncompliance Five -Day Report
Blue Ridge Paper Products, Inc. dba Evergreen Packaging
Canton Mill - Permit No. NC0000272
Dear Mr. Davidson:
On April 5, 2022, weekly effluent samples were collected and analyzed for fecal coliform. On April 6,
2022, we were notified the sample results indicated greater than 600/100 mL, which exceeded our daily
maximum permit limit of 400/100mL.
After the data from the laboratory was reported, all systems in the WWTP were inspected, as well as the
Town of Canton chlorine disinfection system. System components were found to be operating correctly
leading up to and during the time of sample collection.
Upon knowledge of the noncompliance, efforts also began to identify unknown sources of the excessive
fecal coliform levels. At the time of this writing, no certain source has been found. Efforts continue,
including sampling influent sewer and process locations to bracket fecal coliform levels within the
system, as well as sumps and other areas.
Several process samples were collected over the preceding six days to evaluate treatment effectiveness.
All sample results indicated fecal coliform levels at less than 10/100 mL.
A sample was collected at outfall 001 on April 13, 2022. Results are pending and will be provided upon
receipt.
The mill is determined to identify the conditions that led to the noncompliance and will communicate
the outcome of the investigation, once complete.
