The Town should take additional samples (grab) at the point where they normally take grab samples during the initial flow of the siphon cycle. This would verify that you are initially losing solids and not getting proper treatment. It may also be to your advantage to take some flow proportional samples to see if permit limits can be met if this NORTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT AND NATURAL RESOURCES WINSTON-SALEM REGIONAL OFFICE DIVISION OF WATER QUALITY February 4, 1998 The Honorable Curtis Davis, Mayor Town of Yanceyville PO Box 727 Yanceyville, NC 27379 SUBJECT: Compliance Sampling Inspection Town of Yanceyville's WWTP Caswell County Dear Mayor Davis: On December 3, 1997, the above inspecti-on was performed by Mr. Jim Johnston of this Office. This is a follow up letter to the inspection. At the time of the inspection grab samples were taken. During the sampling event the SBR unit had just finished its siphoning. The results are listed below: BOD 58 mg/1 TSS 150 mg/1 Fecal Coliform 3300/100m1 With the high numbers collected for each of the parameters it would have been possible that the Town of Yanceyville would have been in violation of its permitted limits. It appears that the basin at the end of the plant that is to allow flow to be equalized leaving the plant is not operating properly. During the beginning of the siphon cycle a large volume of water is being released that carries solids out of the system. The Town should get with their engineer and have this problem corrected. / 585 WAUGHTOWN STREET, WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA 27107 PHONE 336-77 1 -4600 FAX 336-77 1 -463 1 AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY / AFFIRMATIVE ACTION EMPLOYER - 50% RECYCLED/10% POST -CONSUMER PAPER requirement is included in the permit at renewal.
