Tim Heim of the Asheville Regional Office performed a Bioassay Compliance Inspection on March 8th
and 10th, 2022 for chronic toxicity. Jonathan Gragg (ORC) was present at the time of the inspection.
The facility appeared well maintained and operated at the time of the inspection, and in compliance
with Permit NC0025135.
No violations of permit requirements or applicable regulations were observed during this inspection.
This sampling event result was reported as a pass by the Central Toxicity Lab in Raleigh for 3-Brood
chronic pass -fail toxicity. A detailed DWR laboratory report is included.

Subject: Whole effluent toxicity test results
Huffman Finishing
NPDES Permit # NC0025135/001
Caldwell County
Division of Water Resources
The aquatic toxicity test using flow -proportional composite samples of effluent discharged from
the Huffman Finishing has been completed. Huffman Finishing has a permitted effluent
discharge of 0.25 million gallons per day (MGD) entering Catawba River (7Q10 of 40 CFS).
Whole effluent samples were collected on March 8 and March 10 by Tim Heim for use in a
chronic Ceriodaphnia dubia pass -fail toxicity test. The test passed. Toxicity test information
follows.
Test Type 3-Brood Ceriodaphnia dubia chronic pass -fail
Test Result Pass
Test Concentrations 0.96%
Control Survival 100%
Control Mean Reproduction 24.3 neonates
Test Treatment Survival 91.7%
Treatment Mean Reproduction 22.2 neonates
First Sample pH 7.72 SU
First Sample Conductivity 4380 micromhos/cm
First Sample Total Residual Chlorine <0.2 mg/L
Second Sample pH 7.66 SU
Second Sample Conductivity 4300 micromhos/cm
Second Sample Total Residual Chlorine <0.2 mg/L
Test results for the above samples indicate that the effluent would not be predicted to have
water quality impacts. These samples were split and tested by Meritech, Inc. (Meritech). The
chronic Ceriodaphnia dubia pass/fail test run by Meritech resulted in a pass. Please contact us if
you have any questions or if further effluent toxicity monitoring is desired. We may be reached
at cindy.a.moore@ncdenr.gov and lorimar.henning@ncdenr.gov.
