Direct illicit discharge to a municipal separate storm sewer system
Dear Mr. Whitener:
This correspondence is to notify you that a direct illicit discharge to a storm sewer system from the church
bus lavatory cleanout has been identified by this office.
On 5/27/2019 this office received an email reporting that the tour bus parked at Temple Baptist Church
pulled to the stormwater grate located on Poplar St (approximately 150 feet north of West Ivy St) and
discharged their lavatory waste directly to the stormwater system on both 5/16/2019 and 5/26/2019,
which connects directly to the Kaylor Branch, a tributary of Long Creek. This activity is not only prohibited
by the federal Clean Water Act (1972) but is also prohibited activity in the City of Gastonia Municipal Code
14-571 (b). At this point the City of Gastonia requires you to cease this activity immediately and ensure
that any further discharging of this vehicle is performed at an approved location. Enclosed is a list of
approved facilities to assist you in the proper disposal of the waste and stewardship of our surface water
resources.
