Klimek, P.E Directc Division of Water Qualit Ste€or Subject: Unimin Corporation — Schoolhouse Quartz Facility Representative Outfall Status NCG020112 Avery County Dear Mr. Ferguson: Based on information provided in your letter received May 8, 2002, and the drainage areas that were delineated on the enclosed site map, it has been determined that the outfalls you described should sufficiently represent your waste dumps and mining activities. Therefore, monitored discharges from outfall 110 for the waste dumps and outfall 107 for the mining areas are acceptable. One area that your letter neglected however was your plant processing area. A subsequent conversation with yourself on May 6, 2003 confirmed that outfall 116 would be monitored as representative of this area. As also stated in your letter, outfall 002 will continue to be monitored for mine dewatering discharges. Also enclosed with this letter is the $80 check that you submitted for a minor modification since there is no fee associated with obtaining representative outfall status. Please note that qualitative monitoring is still required at all outfalls at the facility regardless of representative outfall status, as stated in Part III, Section B, Section 3 of General Permit NCG020000. If you have any questions about the content of this letter please contact Ms. Aisha Lau at (919) 733- 5083 ext. 578.
