Subject: Progress of the Fats,Oil &Grease Program
> The City of Burlington's Fats,Oils and Grease Program was implemented as a
two-phase program December 15,2000. Phase I consisted of a cooperative effort
relying on the participation of the food establishments.
➢ Beginning January 01,2001 all food establishments that have grease traps or
interceptors are required to maintain pumping records on site.
> Identified food establishments must maintain an annual pumping schedule and are
required to keep records that identify who performed the pumping or clean out,
when it was done, and where the waste was disposed.
> Inspections for O&G interceptors (grease traps, pits or under counter units)will
begin within the areas of historically high incidence of sewer overflows and then
expand inspections to include the remaining food establishments.
➢ The City of Burlington City Council approved a fee schedule that includes a
$30.00 fee for Fats, Oils and Grease inspections.
> Due to the coronavirus outbreak, in-person inspections were limited to facilities
where high amounts of FOG were seen being discharged. These inspections have
addressed employee education in regards to grease disposal techniques, record
keeping, and proper maintenance of grease traps or interceptors if present.
Pumping records were received electronically and reviewed from 59 food service
establishments.
➢ A program for the Alamance-Burlington school system consisting of 17 school
cafeterias is being implemented.
> The City of Burlington's efforts to reduce residential Fats, Oils, and Grease into
its sewer system consist of educational information inserts added to customer's
water bills and information being published in the City's quarterly publication
"City Works".
