Comment Way back in the early 1970s when a small group of concerned citizens saw the value in protecting the Eno River Basin, they established a nonprofit to further the cause - The Association for the Preservation of the Eno River. I was fortunate to be on the ground floor of the beginning of what has become an extraordinary venture between the public, surrounding cities, the county, the state, and local businesses. To date hundreds of acres have been protected, a state park developed, and thousands have joined the organization to protect one of the most pristine gifts to nature in the southeast. That said, early on we tried to get the city involved in protecting the people's river. The original Christian's Mill stood where the re -constructed mill now stands ready to teach future generations of its contribution. But try as the few members did begging the city to join forces, protect the mill, secure the property for protection, the city refused. At last during a particularly horrendous freshet that came down from the mountains Christian's Mill collapsed. The city had a chance then to do the right thing and it failed. I wrote a letter to the newspaper chastising the city for its lack of care for a historic property. Back and forth the city talked with us, and back and forth it went. But the city learned a lesson as the public rose up in disgust for what the city had allowed to happen. Gone was the historic building but the association refused to give up and a reconstruction took place. Again and again issues have arisen that would damage the river and again and again the Eno River Association has had to fight for the river's rights and for future generations. We are at a crossroads with overdevelopment in the area and to learn of yet another intrusion of structures, cars, and a detrimental impact on this amazing gift to Durham is heartbreaking. I beg that you reject this overblown development and secure, once again, a stand to protect the Eno River Valley. THANK YOU!
