This Westpoint project is an ill-conceived attempt to provide needed housing in the Durham area. While more
housing is definitely needed, clearcutting 54 acres of intact wooded land this close to the Eno River and the West
Point Park would not only deprive native wildlife of their habitat but also deprive all of us of its irreplaceable
carbon- and water -storing capacities. Once clearcut, the ecosystem that refreshes our air and stores carbon
forever can never be replaced. Removing rich living topsoil that has built up over time and then replacing that
massive water -holding capacity with impermeable hard surfaces would only serve to enrich the pockets of the
developers, while Durham would be left to deal with the consequences of downstream flooding triggered by the
Westpoint development as storms grow ever worse from climate change. Already, development has crept closer
to the River than it should have. For all these reasons and many more, you must deny this project. Please
consider adding the acreage to the West Point Park that contributes so much to the enjoyment and health of all
Durham residents and protect it from further encroachment.
