Please pick the response below that represents your stance on the above mentioned project? * Yes - I agree with the project. No - I do not agree with the project. Comment I am vehemently opposed to the Westpoint development and the permit application should not be accepted. The application does not accurately address many issues. There must be significant and thorough investigation into all potential impacts from this proposed development. But I would strongly prefer that the development not be approved, regardless. I, and many family/friends, treasure the West Point on the Eno and surrounding woodlands. There are far too few contiguous natural areas left, and they provide a critical wildlife corridor. Additionally, the impact from grading, blasting etc. will have permanent, negative impacts on the water quality and will destroy habitats for critically endangered species. The US Fish and Wildlife identified urban development as the reason some endangered species are declining (by 80%) in Neuse tributaries. As they stated: "building and deforestation near streams have degraded water quality and aquatic habitat." My family is also concerned about the deforestation involved with this proposed development. It seems that Durham (and most cities) continue to approve developments that cut down and destroy large amounts of forest .. presumably for increase to tax base. The climate is rapidly warming and trees are needed more than ever, to help combat CO2 in the atmosphere. Honestly, we cannot understand why communities continue to clear cut forests when they are desperately needed for the environment/climate. Why not encourage developers to build within the city, tear-down/replace in urban locations instead of destroying the limited natural lands that still remain? At some point, this is completely unsustainable .. there will be no more undeveloped land. There needs to be a shift toward redevelopment and not the destruction of woodlands/natural lands. In addition to the critical harm to the environment and endangered species, this project will also negatively impact the West Point on the Eno historic site and park. This is one of few natural areas for hiking and recreation that Durham provides for its residents. I suspect most residents do not even know of this proposed development and would NOT be in favor. I strongly urge you to reject the permit for the Wespoint development.
