I am a lifelong hike and lover of nature. Seeing Durham grow in population, I have noticed many natural and
green spaces becoming developed, leaving less space for everyone to enjoy.
Throughout the pandemic, more people have gathered in natural spaces for both physical and mental health.
While people enjoying nature is a very good thing, it also it also shows that there might not be enough green
space to host everyone in our city without affecting trails, water quality, and wildlife. For this reason, it is
important to protect the special places that we already have, like West Point on the Eno River.
As Durham grows and evolves, it is important to reserve public space for everyone to enjoy. West Point on the
Eno is one such place. To be anywhere near the Eno River, in any season, is to see how many people from
different walks of life, different class backgrounds, and different races all enjoy green space together. It also
hosts many gatherings and camps so that children can also learn the importance of natural spaces.
We do not know the full extent of climate change, but we do know that water quality and risks of flooding will be
affected. It is also for this reason that we need to protect this area.
