The attempt to develop this property in the 70s was unsuccessful, thank goodness, and resulted in the
establishment of a state park and the preservation of Hugh Mangum's glass plates, which were published in a
book last year by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and the University of North Carolina
Press —Where We Find Ourselves is the name of it. And where we find ourselves now is on the precipice of
spoiling an invaluable resource —the Eno River and it's creeks, not to mention the razing of sixty acres of trees
and habitats. The town has to fight to preserve the things that are at the heart of why people want to live here.
The park and the river need to not be strained and polluted. They are for everyone and shouldn't be damaged for
the benefit of a relatively small number of landowners. The very reason the location is of interest and value to the
developers is the reason to say no.
