DANIEL SMITH Director Brandon Long TCW Wastewater Management 5600 Lakeview Road Charlotte, NC 28269 Subject: Technical Assistance Visit Berkley Oaks MHP WWTP NPDES Permit NC0062278 Gaston County Dear Mr. Long, NORTH CAROLINA Environmental Quality March 11, 2022 On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, I met with you and Brian Stephens for a Technical Assistance visit at the Berkley Oaks Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Gaston County. The visit was at your request concerning some higher -than -normal effluent fecal coliform results causing the WWTP to violate the NPDES permit limits. My observations and highlights of our conversation are listed below for your review. Although nothing conclusive was found to be the cause of the fecal coliform problems, the following remedial actions were discussed: • Installing a UV disinfection unit. It appears that the current set up with the tablet chlorinators does not provide enough contact time for proper disinfection. For chlorine to be an effective disinfectant, a minimum of 30 minutes contact time at peak flow would be required. UV systems only need a few seconds of contact time. This would be the best option. I would highly recommend that the tablet chlorinator and dechlorinator be left in place as a back-up system. • Installing a chlorine contact tank between the tablet chlorinator and the declorinator. The tank would need to have a detention/contact time of at least 30 minutes at the peak flow. • During my visit I noticed a settleometer was set up prior to my arrival. It appeared that very little sludge had settled out to the bottom and the supernatant was slightly turbid. I would suggest that sludge wasting be reduced slightly to increase the solids under aeration and the mean cell residence time. / D_E gmmmmntmmmmmmmm mach North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality 1 Division of Water Resources Winston-Salem Regional Office 1450 West Hanes Mill Road, Suite 300 I Winston-Salem, North Carolina 27105 336.776.9800 Our office appreciates the effort that TCW Wastewater Management staff puts into staying in compliance with your NPDES permit by reaching out to the Winston-Salem Regional Office for technical assistance.
