Subject: Technical Assistance Visit
Berkley Oaks MHP WWTP
NPDES Permit NC0062278
Gaston County
Dear Mr. Long,
NORTH CAROLINA
Environmental Quality
March 11, 2022
On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, I met with you and Brian Stephens for a Technical Assistance
visit at the Berkley Oaks Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Gaston County. The visit
was at your request concerning some higher -than -normal effluent fecal coliform results
causing the WWTP to violate the NPDES permit limits. My observations and highlights of our
conversation are listed below for your review.
Although nothing conclusive was found to be the cause of the fecal coliform problems, the
following remedial actions were discussed:
• Installing a UV disinfection unit. It appears that the current set up with the tablet
chlorinators does not provide enough contact time for proper disinfection. For
chlorine to be an effective disinfectant, a minimum of 30 minutes contact time at
peak flow would be required. UV systems only need a few seconds of contact time.
This would be the best option. I would highly recommend that the tablet chlorinator
and dechlorinator be left in place as a back-up system.
• Installing a chlorine contact tank between the tablet chlorinator and the declorinator.
The tank would need to have a detention/contact time of at least 30 minutes at the
peak flow.
• During my visit I noticed a settleometer was set up prior to my arrival. It appeared
that very little sludge had settled out to the bottom and the supernatant was slightly
turbid. I would suggest that sludge wasting be reduced slightly to increase the solids
under aeration and the mean cell residence time.
