This letter is in response for remission of fines for violation at 415 Culbreth Smith Rd Elizabethtown NC.
Squirrel Hill Finishing farm.
As stated in remission form I did not make a ditch for draining water it was in place when I bought the
farm, purpose was for keeping rain water from ponding on back of barns. I also immediately got dirt
and formed a barrier to eliminate any further release of water from lagoon. I also pumped water from
drainage back to lagoon capturing as much of the drainage as possible.) spent over $20,000.00 for
pump and haul to drop lagoon level six inches to take pressure off of the lagoon. I hauled in 15 loads of
clay to build up low areas and fill in any washed areas. Smithfield also depopulated my farm and did not
return hogs to premises until lagoon was back in compliance. I went 6 weeks without any animals this
hindering my income for this time. I have never had a previous violation and will continue to work hard
to never have any further violations. The money spent to fix this problem was borrowed from farm
credit because I did not have the funds. This was paid back through the course of the year from my hog
operation thus taking money from my pay that I receive. Thank you for your time and consideration.
