The location of the force main rupture was near the Wall St. and 17 Bus. intersection, immediately adjacent to the project. Our Resident Engineer’s office reported that an old pipe fitting that was not in our scope of work to address but was in our project limits may have been indirectly damaged from nearby roller vibrations and shallow undercut operations. The Town of Shallotte has temporarily repaired the force main and will be doing the permanent repair once they receive the necessary materials. I had Sophia make a site visit yesterday afternoon. She could smell the sewage around rupture location but could not smell anything at the outfall from the project, the wetland area, pond, or the outfall to the river. From her photos, it looks like there is some bacteria evident on the water surface at the outfall and wetland. Attached is an enterococci and fecal coliform sampling report provided by the Town of Shallotte. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information on this incident. Mason <tmherndon@ncdot.gov>; Westphal, Anneliese <awestphal@ncdot.gov> Subject: Brunswick County U-5788 Wall St. Shallotte Hannah, Brad, and Stephen, I just found out that there was a sewer force main rupture in Shallotte, NC. Initial reports indicate that 14,000 gallons were lost into the street which likely found it’s way down through the storm drains out from our project. The resident engineer’s office is investigating the incident with the Town of Shallotte and is putting together a report which I will then forward on to you. It sounds like the location of the rupture was outside of the U-5788 Wall St. project limits but we are not sure if the rupture could have been linked to the project in anyway due to changes in pressure from the sewer line installation performed a few weeks ago or from vibrations with the ongoing paving. I am sending Sophia down there this afternoon to get some photos and will forward on the additional reports that I receive. https://www.wect.com/2022/03/06/14000-gallons-raw-sewage-spills-out-onto-shallotte-streets/ Thanks, Sean Farrell Division Environmental Officer Division 3 NCDOT- Division of Highways 910-341-2033 office 910-599-1184 mobile scfarrell@ncdot.gov 5501 Barbados Blvd Castle Hayne, NC 28429 Email correspondence to and from this address is subject to the North Carolina Public Records Law and may be disclosed to third parties.
