Bridge No. 6 Over Haw River on SR 2426
(Cunningham Mill Road)
Rockingham Co.
Subject: Bridge Demo Plan Rev1
Dear Mr. Julian:
The following is the English proposed plan and procedure for dismantling and removing of the
existing bridge structure over the Haw River.
Superstructure
Using hydraulic hoe ram(s) remove the existing deck. Spans B and C will fall on the
ground.
To remove Span A, barge section(s) will be installed in the river before hydraulic
ram used to remove the deck. The barge will be installed with a crane from behind
the existing End Bent. The barge will remain in the river away from the river bank
not to damage the bank. A collection box will be placed on the barge, similar to a
dump truck bed, for the debris to fall into. This box will be lifted off the barge with
the crane and emptied away from the river. Timber mats will be placed from behind
the river bank onto the mat to remove the section of deck above the river banks to
allow the barge to remain off the bank.
Existing girders will be removed with cranes from behind the End Bents.
Substructure –
Using hydraulic hoe ram(s) and excavators remove bents and end bents.
Attempts will be made to pull existing bent on to flood plain before breaking. All
bents will be removed to at least one (1) foot below existing ground elevation or to
river bed elevation.
All debris will be disposed of in at the English waste site or other approved location(s).
Safety is always the first concern to English; as such no worker will be working closer than six feet
(6’) to an exposed edge higher than five feet (5’) above the ground without having proper fall
protection. English will also have a full time spotter on the ground to insure no one is in a
dangerous location prior to demo work starting. This person will have complete authority to stop
all operations if any unsafe work is noticed.
Sincerely,
W. C. English, Incorporated
