The Division of Water Resources received the Year 3 Monitoring Report for the above - referenced site,
dated December, 2013.
The stream is a large, flashy stream within an urban watershed. Based on review of the monitoring
report, the stream channel appears to generally be stable, with localized areas of bank erosion and bank
slumping /mass wasting. In addition, a head cut was identified at Station 5 +75. These areas need to be
monitored carefully, and EEP should consider repairing the headcut before damage to the stream occurs.
With regard to vegetation, one plot out of six is not meeting the performance standard of 320 stems per
acre (stream buffer three -year standard and Neuse riparian buffer five -year standard). The report states
that the standard is met including volunteers; however, the volunteers consist of Chinese privet, loblolly
pine and sweetgum. In addition, pine and sweetgum appear to be quite dense on portions of the site (324
stems of pine and 24 sweetgum stems in plot 5). While diversity of species within the plots remains
adequate, EEP may want to consider control measure to reduce the sweetgum and loblolly pine
volunteers to prevent them from outcompeting planted vegetation.
