• Permit: NPDES NC0027103
• Treatment Process: Town of Pembroke is a combined sewer, consisting of raw sewage and storm water. Raw waste is
collected throughout the town and pumped to the influent lift station at treatment plant. At the headwork's paper and
other debris are removed. Ultrasonic meters record incoming flow. The waste enters a channel designed to aerate and
remove grit/grease. Paper, grit, and grease are hauled to landfill. Waste enters the oxidation ditch (containing
microorganism) where biological treatment takes place. The mixed liquor (food and microorganism) flows into settling
tanks known as clarifiers. The clear water extracted off the top if disinfected in a chlorine contact chamber. Flow is
recorded again. Water travels down the cascade aerator, increasing the oxygen content before entering receiving stream
(Lumber River).
Performance
• One Reportable NPDES violation: Violation occurred August 1999. The total suspended solid was 20.2 PPM and the
monthly limit is 20.0 PPM. During the summer months, we have lots of alga growth in the clarifiers. Previously and
environmental technician with the Division of Water Quality, Fayetteville Regional Office requested we not use harsh
chemical treatment to kill the algae. The algae began to build and sloth off into the clear water where it was detected as
total suspended solids. Immediately a new technique developed which proved to decrease alga growth.
• Due to Hurricane Floyd the Total Suspended Solids limit exceeded for September and October. High volumes of storm
water caused hydraulic overloads and solid wash outs. Notice of Violations where not issued. Storm water also diluted
the influent making it difficult to obtain 85% removal of BOD and TSS.
• No reportable spills.
