• Treatment Process: Pembroke is a combined sewer, consisting of raw sewage and storm water. Raw waste collected
throughout the town pumps to the influent lift station at treatment plant. At headwork's paper and other debris removed.
Incoming flow recorded by ultrasonic meters. The waste enters a channel designed to aerate and remove grit/grease.
Paper, grit, and grease hauled to landfill. Waste enters the oxidation ditch (containing microorganism) where biological
treatment takes place. The mixed liquor (food and microorganism) flows into settling tanks known as clarifiers. The
clear water extracted offthe top is disinfected in chlorine contact chamber. Chlorine residual reduced with sulfur
dioxide. Flow recorded again. Water travels down the cascade aerator, increasing the oxygen content before entering
receiving stream (Lumber River).
II. Performance
• One Reportable NPDES violation: Violation occurred September 2000: The weekly coliform limit exceeded 400
co1/100.
• No reportable spills.
• Pembroke is televising sewer lines to compile information on the existing condition of sewer collection lines. This data
will increase grant repair funds.
• Expansion has added four new lift stations.
