• Treatment Process: Pembroke is a sanitary sewer system consisting of raw sewage. Raw waste collected throughout the
town pumps to the influent lift station at treatment facility. At the headwork's, paper and other debris are removed.
Incoming flow recorded by ultrasonic meters. The waste enters a channel designed to aerate and remove grit/grease.
Paper, grit, and grease hauled to landfill. Waste enters the oxidation ditch (containing microorganism) where biological
treatment takes place. The mixed liquor (food and microorganism) flows into settling tanks known as clarifiers. The
clear water extracted off the top is disinfected in a chlorine contact chamber. Chlorine residual reduced with sulfur
dioxide. Flow recorded again. Water travels down the cascade aerator, increasing the oxygen content before entering
receiving stream (Lumber River).
][I. Performance
• One NPDES violations on 9/6/03: Fecal Coliform exceeded the weekly geometric mean of 400colonies/100m1s. The
facility had a broken water line next to the chlorine feed system. The line was repaired and chlorine feed rate increased.
• No reportable spills.
• Pembroke will be gaining the industrial park, COMtech.
• Walmart coming soon.
• DWQ at the Fayetteville Office has nominated Pembroke Wastewater Treatment Plant for an EPA award (Operations
and Maintenance). Winners to be announce in August.
