GENERAL INFORMATION The Robeson County Water Department operates five (5) wastewater facilities, which discharge to surface water. This wastewater originates from filter backwash during the operation of the water treatment plants. The wastewater consists of iron sludge, which is removed from drinking water. The following is a list of permits and the discharge location: 1. Permit NC0084204 677 Kenric Road SR 1589 Lumberton, N.C. Discharge to Back Swamp Drainage Canal 2. Permit NC0085685 18320 NC 71 North Lumber Bridge, N.C. Discharge to Big Marsh Swamp 3. Permit NC0048577 265 McGirt Road Maxton, N.C. Discharge to Lumber River 4. Permit NC0086991 Sanchez Drive SR 2316 Lumberton, N.C. Discharge to Little Jacob Swamp SR 1170 Raemon, N.C. Discharge to First Swamp II. PERFORMANCE All five (5) wastewater treatment operations work the same way. Filtered backwash water flows to an open lagoon or wastewater facility, which allows solids to settle out before clear water is discharged to surface waters. Solids which are collected may then be treated and disposed of at the Robeson County Landfill. During the period of January -December 2004, all operations ran smoothly. Discharge permits were renewed and issued for all five (5) facilities. Reduced limits were given for chlorine concentrations on the new permits. Arrangements are being made to comply with the new discharge parameters. All five (5) permit discharges were inspected by personnel from the Division of Water Quality in June 2004 and all records, operations, and facilities were found to be satisfactory.
