There it undergoes extensive filtration, sedimentation, sludge removal, and disinfection before being discharged into the Cape Fear River. The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Water Quality closely monitors our collection system, the County treatment facility, and the final discharge. Performance The collection crew has responded to residential and commercial blockage complaints, cleaned 13,258 feet of sewer line, installed 2 sewer taps, repaired countless sewer lines; and maintained the integrity of the system according to Local, State and Federal regulations. Summary of system performance for the fiscal year 2004 to 2005. April 11, 2005 — Overflow occurred at Duncan Street Lift Station. * * *Note — All sanitary sewer overflows have been recorded and reported to the State of North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Water Quality Division. Reminder GREASE is an ongoing problem in the collection system. The Town of Lillington currently spends more than $4000.00 a year to reduce the amount of grease in the collection system. Grease hardens inside the wastewater pipes reducing the amount of space inside the line, which leads to blockages. It also causes pump station malfunctions, which could spill over into local water sources. Contrary to popular belief, running hot water or a type of detergent down the drain does not lessen the effect grease has when it hardens to the walls of the pipe. The only way to prevent this from happening is to dispose of the grease properly. This can be accomplished by freezing animal fat in a can and disposing of it in a trashcan. Another way can be by mixing Liquid vegetable fats with an absorbent such as cat litter or coffee grounds and place in a lidded container before disposal. Any efforts you can make in doing this would greatly help the collection system and reduce the amount of blockages to our customers. Please feel free to contact the wastewater collection department at (910) 893-3607 if you have any questions.
