Brooks Street Wake Forest, NC 27587 1919.435.9400 www.wake foresmc.go% Identifying a Spill and Reporting the Location Once a spill has been identified, please alert your supervisor to the location of the spill. Never attempt to clean up a spill without notifying your supervisor for assistance. Understand the Material and use PPE While reporting the spill to your supervisor discuss the material of the spill and the best approach for containment. Your supervisor should be able to access the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for the materials and let you know if special PPE is needed for containment and cleanup. At a minimum use protective gloves and eye safety protection prior to addressing the spill. Stop the Flow & Contain with Socks If possible, stop the spill at its source. This may mean up righting a spilled container, closing a valve, plugging/sealing a hole, or moving a leaking container into a larger container. Once the flow of the spill has stopped at its source, use the absorbent socks to stop the movement of the spill. You may need to double layer or tier the socks to fully stop the movement of the spill depending on the volume. Take special note of nearby drains or inlets that would allow the material to enter the storm sewer system. Take extra measures to protect all the ways that the pollutant can get into the system. Inlet covers are available in the fleet maintenance building and in the streets shelter. If the spill gets into the system, please notify the stormwater engineer as soon as possible. Use Matting Once the spill has been mostly contained, start applying absorbent mats and pillows. Only if necessary, utilize the dry loose absorbent to absorb additional material after the mats have been utilized and disposed of. Dispose of Waste Properly Use the garbage bags provided in the spill kit to collect and dispose of used spill kit materials. Consult with your supervisor regarding the proper disposal of the waste. This information should be provided in the MSDS documents. TOWN of WAKE FOREST 301 S.
