This is the type of event I am referring (attached). Below is a comment I provided on another
project.
So, I have always struggled with SW discharge from a bmp that is released to a steep slope
leading to a stream. Typically the flow leaves the dissipater pad and then (with large events)
rushes down slope, eroding and scouring its way to the small stream below. Potential options
6
(rough idea/concept): (A) The dissipater pad includes "checkdams" of larger rock. Depending
on the discharge the size, width and number of checkdams (or plunge pools) vary. Or (B) a
permanent well-constructed/hardened truly level spreader is utilized. Thanks, alan

Jonathan,
See Alan's stormwater discharge comments below. Do you have any additional information regarding the
outlets that you can provide to show that we will not get erosion at the pond outlets?
Alan,
In other parts of the state (Neuse for example) we have to extend SCM outlets to the stream so that the buffer
does not erode.

Regarding SW, it appears that site has some strong relief. The discharge for the SW outfall
should be constructed to dissipate the large/high velocity discharge from storm
events. Scour/plunge pools and/or level spreaders may be appropriate to prevent erosion and
10
concentrated flow paths over time from these outfalls. No outfall should discharge within 30
ft. of the creek(s)
The project is still on PN.

1. SKIMMER SHALL BE INSPECTED BY THE
FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE PARTY OR HIS
DESIGNATED AGENT WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER
EACH RAIN EVENT EXCEEDING 1/2" (DAILY
DURING PROLONGED RAINFALL PERIODS) AND
AT LEAST WEEKLY REGARDLESS OF RAINFALL.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE NEEDED SHALL BE
PERFORMED IMMEDIATELY.
2. SHOULD THE SKIMMER BECOME CLOGGED WITH
DEBRIS OR SEDIMENT, PULL THE SKIMMER TO
THE SIDE OF BASIN WITH THE PULL ROPE AND
CLEAN. HEAVY EQUIPMENT SHOULD NOT BE
USED TO MOVE THE SKIMMER AND DRAIN LINES.
3. SEDIMENT DEPOSITS IN THE OUTLET ZONE OF
THE BASIN SHALL BE REMOVED WHEN THEY
IMPAIR THE SKIMMER FROM DRAINING THE
BASIN. PULL SKIMMER TO SIDE AND REMOVE
SEDIMENT DEPOSIT, THEN RESET SKIMMER TO
DESIRED LOCATION.
4. EXCAVATE A SHALLOW PIT UNDER THE SKIMMER
SO THAT IT WILL DRAIN THE ENTIRE BASIN.
SKIMMER SHOULD REST ON BOTTOM WITH A
POSITIVE DRAIN SO THAT WATER WILL NOT
STAND IN DRAIN PIPE AND FREEZE.
