The Code of Federal Regulation, Title 40, Part 503 requires one of the vector attraction requirements listed in 503 to be met. The Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate Test is one of the listed requirements in 02T and 503. EPA document "Environmental Regulations and Technology: Control of Pathogens and Vector Attraction in Sewage Sludge" provides guidance for the Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate Test. Standard Method 2710 B should be followed with one exception. The total solids concentration instead of the volatile suspended solids concentration is used in the calculation of the specific oxygen uptake rate (SOUR). A SOUR of 1.5 mg oxygen/hour/gram total solids or less at 20 degrees centigrade indicates that an aerobically digested sludge has been adequately reduced in vector attraction. For information see "Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate Testing Compliance" letter at; http://portal.ncdenr.org/web/wq/aps/lau/reporting Fill in sampling information in the blue boxes at the top of the spreadsheet and record the measured dissolved oxygen level at one minute intervals in blue boxes on left. The percent total solids must be 2% or less, the temperature range must be between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius, and the dissolved oxygen level must be 2 mg/L or above.
