Duf�ing ��ecent deptl� soundings and bridge survey f�eviews, it ��vas discovered ti�at brid�,e piliribs at� bent I# 166 a��e belo�� the minimum pile embedment depth (critical scour elevation). "T'his means that the bottom contouf� has eroded a�vay to a critieal point around the pile structure. This lack of �round sup}�o��i af�ound the piles is very coi�cernii�g to bridge structur-al engineers and warrants in�mcdiate action io pr-event furti�er sco�n�, which will lead to a bridge closure. in order to reduce further srour and l�ss of str�ictw�al integrity, NCDOT is proposin� an ar-rangement of 503 conci•ete A-jac!<s and 409 sandba,;s placed af�ound thP piles associatecl witli bel�t # 166. The scour protection A-jacl<s and sand bags wi(i be placer� ot� tl�e bottom and tied to�ether b}� stainless steel cable and K.evlar line to create uniform com,inuous l�rote�:?ive layer. The total footpriilt on the bottoiu will be 2,251 square feet 1'3•oili the A ja.cl<s and 3,691 sq. leet fi-om th� sandba�s. This iotals an ai-ea of impact to the inlet floot� of 0.084 acr�s. After t�he n•-jacl<s and sandba� placement is complete, a pi•edicted minimuin water depth will be a��pi�otiimately �9 fieet fi•om Mea�� Low Tide. The A-ja�;l< and sandbag placement arran�ement and detail is provided i�� the attached permit drawings. Sand used to iill the 3X3 sandbags will come fi-om windblown beach sa��ci ihai has cc�llected on the� Old Coast Gu�rd Station 12d. (SR 1257) and the borrow pit located in Avon. The Avo�� bo��row pit has bGei� rsviewed for quality beaeh sand material and fo�nid to be compatible. Oniy l�each qualiry sa��d that is similat� in size anci appearance will be used.
