(Shield) is pleased to provide this explanation of the construction dewatering activities at the ArchCo Residential site in Denver, North Carolina. Robert Griffin, P.E., with Shield, visited the site Tuesday October 12, 2021, to inspect the dewatering piping. Due the nature of the soils, the Cambridge Project required evaluation of both the soils and the moisture content of those soils. In one area of the project, expansive clays, that retain moisture, and perched water created issues for construction of foundations and other aspects of the project. Shield provided geotechnical evaluation of the soils and groundwater elevations in order to assist with constructability of the project. After a significant dewatering evaluation of the area around Building 7 and the associated parking area for that building, Shield designed a temporary dewatering system to allow for construction of the building foundations and parking. This temporary system was designed with dewatering wells to temporarily lower groundwater that was perched above the clay layer. This system utilized pumps, tanks, and recirculated water to create a venturi effect and "vacuum" water from the wells. The system was installed and operated for approximately 2 - 3 weeks. The system has subsequently been totally dismantled and removed from the site. There is a stormwater BMP pond onsite designed to mitigate the effects of the parking and structures during rain events. (See Bohler Engineering design drawings for the Stormwater Control Measure/BMP for the site.) 4301 Taggart Creek Road www.shieldengineering.com Telephone 704.394.6913 Charlotte, NC 28208 License No. F-0856 ArchCo Residential October 14, 2021 Shield Project No. 1200195-01 Page 2 A system of permanent passive dewatering, French drain, systems was installed sub slab to assist in the removal of potential groundwater that may be in the vicinity of the floor slab. This design incorporates shallow trenches with perforated pipe and stone 3 to 4 feet below the floor slab. See the attached Shield drawings for design details of each building and the under -drain system. The permanent building passive drains for Buildings 5 and 6 are directed to a stormwater collection pipe that does not pass through the designed pond and would therefore have NO impact on the pond or the design loading. During inspection there was no flow coming from the passive dewatering systems under Buildings 5 and 6. Please reference the attached photo log for pictures of the piping connected to Buildings 5 and 6. Building 7 and the adjacent parking were also constructed with passive permanent drainage. The drains from these two areas were piped to the stormwater collection system that is connected to the Stormwater Management (BMP) Pond onsite. These are again shallow French drain systems that are design to allow the upper 2 feet of soil to remain dry enough to reduce "pumping" in the parking area and reduce sub slab moisture in the building. During my inspection, there was no flow coming from either of these systems. Please reference to attached photo log for pictures of the pipes from the parking lot and building underdrain system with zero flow. Based on an evaluation of the onsite BMP, there were no adverse effects from with the temporary dewatering during construction or from the permanent passive systems that were constructed under the building slabs. If there are any questions or for further discussion, please feel free to contact me at any time. Sincerely, Shield Engineering, Inc. !\ieaa"tCtii,=,® ® Egg/® • SEAL fir•`'( Robert L.
