C. 28801 Dear Mr. Hetzell; .w. 28777-0861 ' After our telephone conversation on Sept. 23, 1992, concerning the illegal landfill behind the Bear Den .Campground, I checked with other lot owners and the Bear Den Acres Water Association President. We do not agree with your solution of contouring the land over the dump as a viable answer to the problem. It doesn't address the problem of the,dump leaking into the ground water. There are.three springs and two wells witkiin 1500 ft. of the dump site from which all our water comes. Also there are six or seven other land owners just below the dump with springs or wells. Since we are tal king about a 1-acre landfill that has been actively used for years, until 1 month ago when we first contacted you, with all the garbage, trash, sludge, and whatever else the campground and Christmas tree farm has discarded there, Mr. Rick Moody's assurance to you'that everything in'the dump is safe is not very reassuring to us. Since none of our water sources', or the creek running beside the dump, have been tested for contamination we feel your decision may have been hasty. I have been told the proper procedure for dealing with an unpermitted landfill that could pose a problem for people in the area is dig it up and haul it to an authorized land- fill. Then everyone is assured of their health and safety. The one thing we don't want to hear is an 'loops" six months, a year, or even five years down the road.
