We are not requesting a trout moratorium for this project, however there is potential for Eastern Hellbenders to be in
the footprint. It is a rare aquatic salamander, which is considered a Federal Species of Concern and state-listed as Special
Concern. It is also a Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN) in the North Carolina Wildlife Action Plan (2015).
NCWRC has an on-going, long-term hellbender inventory and monitoring project for this species. To help us determine
the potential for hellbenders, could you provide any photos you may have that would show the areas of the stream that
will be impacted, such as by dewatering? If appropriate habitat is present, it will be important not to disturb or move
boulders and large rocks in the stream during construction. Also, if habitat is present, we’d like to be kept informed of
when construction will begin, so that we may relocate hellbenders as appropriate. Please keep Lori Williams, our
hellbender biologist, and Andrea Leslie (both cc’ed) informed in my absence. I have just a few days left.
