Weatherspoon Steam Electric Plant
Permit No: NC0005363
Robeson County
Dear Mr Frederick:
Donald R. van der Vaart
Secretary
Enclosed please find a copy of the Compliance Evaluation Inspection form from the inspection
conducted on 7/27/2015. The`Compliance Evaluation Inspection 'was conducted by Mark Brantley,
Environmental Senior Specialist, of the Fayetteville Regional Office. The cooperation of Mr. Kent
Tyndall, Environmental Professional, and Mr. Anthony Locklear, facility ORC, was greatly appreciated.
The facility was found to be in Compliance with permit NC0005363. As a reminder, preservation of the
Waters of the State can only be achieved through consistent NPDES Permit compliance.
Comments
• Facility was clean and neat in appearance at the time of the inspection.
• Facility has not had a"discharge from effluent outfall pipe 001 (located in the cooling pond) since
the late 1990's when the area experienced an active hurricane time period. Effluent outfall pipe
002 was removed from the facility's NPDES permit on April 17, 2012.
• Closure and demolition of the coal fired portion of Weatherspoon Steam Electric Plant has been
completed that included electricity producing equipment. (This does not include the coal ash
pond.)
• The water level in the cooling pond was at the lowest level ever noted by the staff that was
present for the inspection. The only water entering the pond currently is rainwater/stormwater,
any water that is draining form the coal ash storage pond through the drain system, and a small
amount of domestic wastewater from the sand filtration system that was used when facility was
operating.
