Comment Dear Committee, I hope this message finds you well. To introduce myself, I am a Durham resident who has the good fortune to live just steps from the Eno. I have a Masters degree in ecology. The environmental impacts of this project are clear, as laid out by the organizers who have made great efforts to raise awareness of this project. Rather than echo their detailed report, I want to write an appeal based on the cultural value that the Eno brings to Durham. Our house sits atop a hill near the Open Air Camp Trailhead. Each summer, we listen to shouts, laughter and singing coming from the forest. Families and groups of friends hike from the trailhead to swim in the river and take refuge from the Southern heat. Throughout the year, fishers of all stripes park at our driveway, a hidden access point, to spend time with the Eno and unwind from city life. Neighbors and their dogs return each day from swimming happy and replenished. Our little stretch of forested paradise cannot accommodate all those who wish to enjoy the water. Most importantly, the people who use the Eno can be assured of it's safety for themselves and their children. The proposed development above the Westpoint park will rob Durhamites of that tranquility. Durham is in a unique position: many major cities, older cities, clear cut their forests and polluted their water supply many long years ago. We don't have to be like those cities. Our children can swim and play and look for salamanders and crayfish in OUR river without fearing pollution. I urge you to reject this application. Durham is in dire need of affordable housing, but the expense of this development is too great.
