Comment I am vehemently opposed to the Westpoint development and their permit application. I do not think the assessments reflect the true picture of the development's impacts and the impacts from the 401 Individual Clean Water Act Permit disturbances. I believe the assessments need to be vetted again and the plan modified to cause less harm. The Eno River and Westpoint are important to Durham, and to me, in a way I cannot overstate. West Point and the Eno are for everyone. The park is free, and it's within our city limits. It supports our ecosystem and brings us in contact with that ecosystem. It's the reason why Durham is the greatest city in the Triangle -- we have this woodland we can run to after work. My niece is growing up along the Eno. This land became especially important to Durhamites during COVID-19's lockdown period. I spent every day at the Eno last year. I walked my sister's dog at West Point; I brought my niece and our neighbors out weekly to play in the river. And I saw hundreds of people of all backgrounds doing the same. Harm to this important place would be harm to myself and my community. It would be a particular tragedy for such harm to come preventably, as a result of what I believe to be an improperly vetted development plan. Specifically, I refer you to the group The Save Black Meadow Ridge, who have raised many concerns that I share. Each point being raised by this group needs more thorough investigation. I also believe a Public Hearing should be required for this development. This is my niece and her dog. We created a whole world in our head along our Westpoint trail. We’ve named every little beach. It would hurt our community so much to lose moments like these.
