Not destroying the Black Meadow Ridge with development is important to not only West Point on the Eno, the
community that lives nearby, but for the health of the area as well. Cutting trees and destroying plant life that
mitigates flooding and storm water runoff will harm the waters of the Eno River. Protect the Eno River for
macroinvertabrates, fish and wildlife to thrive, for waters to remain clear and clean. Building a development
would have detrimental effects on the ecology of the area, and impervious surfaces with rooftops and roads will
impair the water as sediment and runoff permanently impact the river no matter how much developers claim they
can contain it. Once silt gets in the river and chemicals from lawns and landscaping add pollution to the water it
will impair water quality. With climate change a growing threat, having trees and greenery instead of townhouses
or development will help mitigate problems for the river and its wildlife. We need wilderness -like forests for
animal and bird habitat. Biodiversity would be impacted by destroying the woods and replacing it with traffic and
housing. The Eno River is a treasure. Destroying those woods will impair both the health and the beauty we all
need to thrive. I was around when Margaret Nigard was trying to save this river, and contributed a photograph of
the Occoneechee Mountain for the first calendar. Preserving the land surrounding the river and providing access
to the river has been beneficial for both the human and the animal community through the decades since then
Saving our natural resources for all to enjoy is important for future generations.Clean water and healthy river
ecosystems are critical for our wellbeing.
